I recompiled the kernel (without any changes) using make bzImage/modules/modules_install etc..

On a different note: Why not install a modern linux as a host and run the original system in a VM (kvm should be fine). In the early days there was the tried-and-true, all-powerful linuxconf that many thought would remain the one and only Linux configuration tool until the end of times. This would allow me to boot and mount a root file-system.Save the previous kernel ".config" file.

The failures of the mpt_* symbols seem to indicate that the driver in your initrd image does not match the kernel you use, OR there is an error before that about Namely dmesg shows that mptscsi disk driver is broken, and I would guess that one was supporting your boot disk controller. You might want to remove the RAID driver module load from the source OS, or open the VM drive image and remove it from the system initialization scripts. his comment is here no UUID involved here.

You might want to contact VMware or post a query on their user forums to see what you should do. Failing that, I would like to find an alternative solution so that I can turn off this physical machine and start using the virtual machine. Sorry, how do I remove a module from the initialization scripts? Next step is to convert it to ESXi.
